Acquisition of open-source video communications technology and engineering team reinforces 8×8’s technology stack and unique ability to deliver best-in-class meetings experience

8×8 have today announced that it has acquired Jitsi, an open source Video Communication platform, along with its team of engineering & programming experts to assist with developing the 8×8 offering around conferencing applications and WebRTC. The Jitsi platform will further expand the 8×8 X Series cloud-based collaboration platform and team at its heart.

8×8’s Chief Product Officer, Dejan Deklich, believes that the best communication solutions must be intuitive for the user, reliable for the business, and enable individuals and teams to be far more productive. By incorporating Jitsi into the current 8×8 portfolio, along with having access to the engineering team who have developed the open-source platform, Deklich believes that this has opened the door to much higher quality video and audio across mobiles and desktops for customers, and provides great enhancements to the already extensive X Series.

What does the Jitsi Platform Include?

  • A set of Jitsi’s modular open-source projects designed for business collaboration
  • The Jitsi Videobridge conferencing service
  • Jitsi Meet conferencing and Collaboration application
  • A fully open-source platform with a community of experienced developers
  • 100% standards-compliant technology

You may be surprised to know that Jitsi forms the backbone to many highly used collaboration platforms and company projects, used for millions of minutes of daily usage throughout the world. Products including Stride, Comcast, Rocket.Chat and Symphony, and organisations including Greenpeace, Bluetone, the University of Strasbourg and Qomtec all use Jitsi for powering their diverse collaboration ecosystems.

“I have no doubt that Jitsi’s advanced capabilities combined with 8×8’s comprehensive X Series platform will create a dominant video communications solution that is intuitive and game-changing for enterprises.”

– Emil Ivov, Jitsi Founder & Project Lead

The Jitsi Development Team

Although acquired by 8×8, is has been stated that the Jitsi team will remain intact and continue as an independent team, operating in much the same way as before. However with access to higher funding and major backing from a world leader, the development team will play a critical role in developing the new X Series capabilities including dedicated video collaboration applications and WebRTC to further enhance the 8×8 Meeting solution.

“ The open source community has played a critical role in advancing Jitsi’s projects by validating its use in a diverse set of environments and complementing the core team’s development. As part of this acquisition, 8×8 is committed to continuing to support the growing developer community, and we are excited to engage even more.”

– Bryan Martin, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer at 8×8.
