IP networks are increasingly replacing ISDN for video communications within the enterprise. Many enterprises now using IP for video would like to communicate with other enterprises using ISDN.

Enterprises using IP for internal communications still have a need to call outside the enterprise. A gateway makes it possible for systems on an IP network to connect to systems using ISDN. Gateways can also provide an alternative to the public Internet for connecting geographically separate IP video callers.

TANDBERG Gateway

Other gateways are difficult to use, requiring callers to add a series of digits to the dialed number. Also, they do not support all of the features of a video system. For example, calls are not secure because gateways do not support encryption, advanced presentation features are disabled so that presentation and presenter can not be viewed at the same time, and calls can be unreliable because Downspeeding is not supported.

The TANDBERG Gateway eliminates these obstacles. It is the first gateway to provide full feature transparency for video systems. The TANDBERG Gateway offers unique call transfer capabilities and embedded encryption, and supports advanced presentation features of other vendors' systems as well as all functionality of TANDBERG systems.

The TANDBERG Gateway should be added to a network if:

  • there is a mix of internal ISDN and IP calls are placed within the enterprise
  • the enterprise wants to leverage an existing IP network to make global calls via ISDN
  • video callers want all TANDBERG features available in a mixed environment
  • IP video callers would like to bypass the public Internet when calling other IP systems
